More Good Stuff

So many times we need to explain to our kids about how it was in 'our day'. Like how the phone was connected to the wall and how we had to get up to change the channels...stuff like that. Luckily we don't have to explain how we would get in our feety pajamas, grab our pillows, and claim our space in the Vista Cruiser! San Luis is one of the very few towns that still have a drive-in. This night there was two equally good movies playing, so we grabbed the essentials and and off we went.

One thing we do need to explain is how speaker boxes were attached to these posts...5

and back in our day there were swings, now there are video games...

Hidden Treasure: Bella Pops, by Kim

Summer has officially arrived and it is oh, so, good. So excited to share another hidden treasure around these parts with you...and at the perfect time nonetheless. Summer? Popsicles? Perfect! Take it away Kim!

The other day when I was in Staples, I forget what I went in to get….not uncommon for me lately. Fortunately I ran into Chris Anderson, and she showed me her really cute flyer she was having made up for her new company Bella Pops. This made me so happy; I didn’t mind forgetting why I was there.

The thought of popsicles reminds me of when I was a little girl. My friend Barbara lived 3 blocks up from me on Sunset Drive, in the summer her brothers sold popsicles out of the garage. It was a long walk, uphill the entire way. But it was well worth it, because in their freezer they had a multitude of flavored popsicles to choose from.

The Bella Pops that Chris makes are more sophisticated then the popsicles of my childhood; her pops are true healthful frozen gourmet treats. Made from fresh fruit, pure cane sugar, natural flavorings & fresh herbs. No artificial anything! Such a great idea! Of course I had to invite myself over to try a few. When it comes to food, I am not shy.

On the menu for our tasting were 3 of the many flavors to choose from.

  • Strawberry/Basil: I loved the addition of the cinnamon basil; maybe because it made it seem just a little more of a grown-up treat.
  • Meyer Lemon: Perfect balance of sweet & tart, and a touch of lemon zest for added flavor, I could eat about 6 of these…no kidding. I didn’t, but would have if there was nobody around to watch me.
  • Chocolate /Orange: Decadent for sure, No cream, but the texture is smooth and the rich dark chocolate flavor was offset perfectly with the orange, it’s flecked with zest of orange too. Far too rich to eat more then 1

I was not able to choose a favorite, but it was between the Meyer Lemon and the Chocolate Orange, both were too good to say one was better then the other. I am also anxiously waiting the fresh watermelon pop that is in the works too!

Popsicles make me smile. Memories of sitting on the curbside in front of Barbara’s house, on a hot summer day, enjoying a popsicle and giggling as we watched the older neighborhood girls come by and flirt with the brothers.

Bella Pops are available at the Pismo Pier Farmers Market Wed 3-6pm

For your special event, wedding or party. Call and make a tasting appointment.

We love our location, it's off the beaten path. We are located off the 101 just right outside of 'downtown'. We like to call our area Slo Ho. Recently, we had a lovely customer that is 90 years old, born and raised in San Luis, tell us that she had never heard of Walker St....not promising in our book.

Some people say that they use Walker as a 'short cut' to avoid a few lights on Higuera. We are one buisness among many in this area, we are all locally owned, there is plenty of parking, and have regular customers that keep us company. We are in the parking lot of Quality Fabrics, down the street from Ben Franklins sandwich shop, and we would love to meet and greet you!

One more time, we are now open on Fridays also, and if you see the doors open during our non-regular hours, come on in, you are certainly welcome!

As one of us says, we love Slo Ho, because we don't have downtown manners!

What's Not to Love! Part II.

How did you like part one of the house tour? You've seen the beauty of most of the space but I wanted to share images of the little private area off to the side of the house that could easily be's a little garden and most definitely a labor of love. Here is a peek at the secret garden!

Speaking of gardens, the garden in the movie "It's Complicated" with Meryl Streep was a favorite of mine, remember it? It was a perfect combination of kitchen garden and cutting garden. Another favorite was Tasha Tudors. I know she passed a few years ago, but does anyone know what became of her property? Gardens are like anything else, it doesn't matter how large or small they are, it's about the love that is put into it and the energy that it brings to us.

We are so lucky to have THE most amazing, talented people come through our doors. Lucky for you, we talked one of them into letting us take a few pictures of her open, warm and beautiful surroundings.

One of the many things we love about this space is that it is a perfect example of modern, vintage and current styles.

Another is COLOR! Color on the pillows, walls, on vases and art, it's a breath of fresh air.

Another favorite, that I am so envious of, are the floor to ceiling french doors that invite the inside out and the outside in.

This husband/wife team has endless amounts of food, wine & entertaining talents so this outdoor kitchen is used to its potential.

Stay tuned for part II!
