January 12th, Book It!

After a long winters nap, I decided that I had to have a meeting with myself. We were camping in our favorite space, in our favorite spot, so what better atmosphere to set up. The comute wasn't very long, so these wheels were perfect for the job.

The first order of buisness was the San Luis Obispo half/full marathon coming to town on Earth Day in 2012--April 22nd.

We have been involved with the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society for about 10-11 years now and they have a group Team in Training that will take you from the couch to the finish line for 1/2, full and century rides. They are a group of people in different areas that are just like us--everyday people, everyday lives doing not everyday things, but amazing things.
You see, in exchange for the coaching, life changing events that they help us prepare for, we commit to raising funds for the cause.

Ask anyone who has been involved with this organization or one like it, it is a challenge and an attainable one if you have two working legs and feet. Everyone has a different reason for joining, maybe it is on your bucket list, maybe you want lose weight, or maybe your friends are all joining. For some of us...itt is much more personal.

We invite you to come to a meeting that we are hosting on January 12th, 5:30ish at The Rose. There will be people there to answer your questions, help relieve any anxiety and help you to get started.

There is a book that I will be quoting from that is written by John "the Penguin" Bingham.

More on him later--I always seem to revisit this book right before and during these running commitments--because he is me, and you.

If this isn't the time for you, the time commitment just won't work, you have a little one on the way, or maybe bad feet...there is another job that can keep you part of this event--a supporter, there are water stops along the course and we need supporters like you for that. The requirements are minimal. Think about it. We hope to see you there!

Ruby Rose Drive-Up

Posted on: Thursday, December 22, 2011

Since we are in a city that doesn't allow Drive Thru's, we have the next best thing tomorrow, Ruby Rose Drive-Up! That's right , tomorrow Friday Decembee 23rd, you can drive right into the parking lot that adjoins our store, and if you don't want to get out of your car and shop, we can run over and help you while you sit in your car. How's that for convenience?

Inside we will be serving hot apple cider and sweet Christmas cookies, so you may want to get out of your car. Either way we will be happy to see you and help you finish your holiday shopping,

Our Version of the 12 Day of Christmas

Christmas is approaching soon (how does it manage to sneak up so quickly every year?!) and there are two things that we don't want to lose sight of: the birth of the Baby in the manger...and remembering that "it's the thought that counts!".

With that being said, we here at Ruby Rose love the Christmas tradition of giving gifts...and you do too, right? Well, we are here to help.

Welcome to the 12 Days of Christmas (express)--Ruby Rose style!
On the first day of Christmas, Ruby Rose called to me--a swanky floral velveteen chair ($95!).

We may be starting this a bit behind schedule, but not to worry, we will catch you up.
Stay tuned for day two and three--coming up very soon!

Taking Some Time for Tea at Ruby Rose

Posted on: Wednesday, December 14, 2011

At Ruby Rose, we surround ourselves with "beautiful" junk, but that doesn't mean we don't enjoy some of the finer things in life, such as taking time out for afternoon tea.

Recently Updated52

Our friend Tracy of Stewart & Clark has added afternoon tea time at her café, and we were happy to be the first to sample her Full Tea* menu.

One of the teas was a lovely fragrant black tea called Miriage Freres--perfect for sipping out of a delicate vintage tea cup.

If you've ever been by Ruby Rose in the afternoon you will notice that we take our treat time very seriously. It's such a pleasure to sit down for a few moments and just enjoy sweet bites and each other. It's reviving, and in our case, it's a nice break before we attempt moving everything we moved out of the store, back into the store...before it gets dark.

Guest Post by Kim: Hidden Treasure // SLO Toffee Company

Posted on: Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Something I discovered years ago at a local Christmas Craft Fair was a special handmade toffee. I looked forward to buying bags of it for myself and as gifts, because it was so good, and I could only get it once a year... it was precious secret. Now mother/daughter Cindy Jones and Kristen Bender have opened SLO TOFFEE COMPANY and my dream has come true, it will be available year round.

PhotosfromSLOTC

I like to break it into small pieces to try and fool myself into thinking I’ve had about 6 pieces, instead of just 1...but those kind of mind games don’t really work on me so I don’t know why I even try. Cindy says people seem to like the white chocolate, but I don’t know. I’m a chocolate purist and the darker the better, so I tend to stick with the dark chocolate. But for those of you who do prefer white or milk chocolate, there is no need to disagree with me--she makes all 3 kinds, so we can all coexist in harmony while eating our toffee of choice.

We will be sampling the toffee at Ruby Rose on Friday and Saturday, so stop in and give it a try.

Los Angeles

Posted on: Thursday, December 8, 2011

Sometimes it feels like there should be a support group for what I'm about to say..."I love L.A., yep, I do! I live in paradise in San Luis and can't imagine living anywhere else, but I do love a getaway to San Francisco or L.A., for the cities have a certain energy and endless offerings.

Ruby and I took a little overnighter recently. We visited disneyland one day and L.A. the next.

We woke up early and headed to The Grove--they have some great holiday decor. We had breakfast at DuPars Restaurant & Bakery...this place has THE best pancakes ever! It's a very old school diner that hasn't changed its philosophy since starting up in 1938. They have an early bird special that they charge you the price of the time you come in between 4-6. If you arrive at 4 :12, you pay $4.12! Love it.

Can you see Santa and his reindeer flying overhead?! There is snowfall throughout at dusk!

I love the way people dress to shop here--most were definitely on their game!

There is an American Girl store here and these little ones take it very seriously!

The Grove is connected with the Farmers Market. I remember my parents going there on their date drives. There are over 100 eateries/specialty foods under one roof. It is soooo hard to decide what to eat--the famous French dip, Chinese, Mexican, Italian, pastries, the list goes on, yummm. Ruby and I love the Cuban, there is always the longest line but it is sooo worth it.

We LOVE the shoe department at Nordstrom. Don't you feel like the shoes call to you sometimes?

After spending the whole day at The Grove, we headed out feeling accomplished, and then we ran into this sign! The pop up sale is held at Hollywood High every Saturday morning. Ruby and I decided that it was fate and that we must check it out--we each had 30ish dollars left.

There were dealers with racks and tables, and what seems to be appearing a lot more nowadays--boutique trucks. It makes me want to have a Ruby Rose pop-up truck, what do you think?

What a fun way to end the day! Ruby came home with a sweater, a scarf, and a pearl cocktail ring and I bought some boots, whew.

We are already planning our next trip--to a really fun exhibit at The Getty and a showing of Wicked which is back at the Pantages.
