Ruby Around Town Vo. 3

Posted on: Friday, April 18, 2014

It's been a very full week with us at the rose...

(1) The week started out with one of my besties helping me out at the shop. After work we felt like we deserved a treat, so we did! Scout Coffee is San Luis's newest coffee house and we especially like their lil milkshakes. A perfect size for a refreshment.

(2) Road trip south...our most awesome crew covered us for the day so that we could extend our trip! First stop is one of our favorite boutiques, Plenty, in Santa Ynez. We follow them on insta (@plentyboutique) and the dresses they have been posting lately made us high tail it down...and we didn't come back empty handed!

(3) Second stop was another favorite shop, Wet Sand. It is in Ventura and is a curated surf lifestyle shop - we love their clothing, jewelry, and other casual living necessities.

(4) After a good nights' sleep in a friends' trailer - home away from home when in L.A. - we shopped the Rose Bowl for boots, clothes, purses, and jewels. We try not to let all of the other amazing merchandise keep us from focusing on the task at hand, but it is very hard.

(5) Back to San Luis to rest up so that we could hit the road for a very important appointment with one of our favorite suppliers! The mister and I hit the road again (very early) to pick from a container that was loaded in Texas. We love our new items and they should hit the store next month....stay tuned!

(6) All this work, we needed a bit of play! Yep, Bingo was it's name-o. A handful of us got our game on and had a lot of laughs. Next time we hope to win!!

Yep, that was just one week. Oh boy. How has your week been? Do anything exciting?

P.S. In case ya missed it:

Snapped: SLO Street Style

Posted on: Monday, March 24, 2014

Our town is full of locals with an eye for style, so we took it upon ourselves to show them off! Snapped, SLO Street Style posts will highlight the daily fashion in San Luis Obispo that grabs our attention as well as our camera. Work it, SLO!

Springtime means fashion takes a turn: jackets are optional, sandals stay on in the evening, and everyone bares a little more. And our streets are no different! Here is Genoa, a Cal Poly student, with her colorful nails and accessories, including a sweet Brandy Melville bra!

Here is Kelly, she works at Rosetta in town. We found her strolling Farmer's Market with her bunches of greens.

These darling girls work down the street at a local clothing store, Ambiance: Mikaela and Emily.

Lizzie's style earned her our bohemian mama title-not to mention she really is a mom!

Right in step with the blooming wildflowers, Sierra, a music school teacher, rocks a cute sunflower dress while humming down the street-with perfect pitch of course. Are you next? Wear your best sunny style and we'll keep our eyes peeled for you!

Welcome to the first installment of Ruby Around Town where we document exceptionally wonderful weeks! Here are some fun things that we did:

  • Pop tarts at Sally Loo's - there is always a new and delicious flavor every Wednesday. They fly off the shelf fast, so get there bright and early.
  • It was a good mail day: the Anthology Magazine & the Free People Catalog arrived, talk about a snail mail score!
  • Still pinching ourselves that we get to hang with Mary Emmerling and Ann Lawrence at High Noon, Mary has written 20+ books and edited at House Beautiful magazine, Country home to name a few...Ann is a designer in Santa Fe, New Mexico and has worked with some amazing people. The dinner conversation was epic!! Did you read about our trip to Arizona?
  • Romp Shoes did a photoshoot at the shop with some props - we love helping out local businesses whatever way we can!

How was your week? We hope it was a good one!

Go Small, Get Vintage (& win $50!)

Posted on: Monday, November 25, 2013

Don't worry about cutting Thanksgiving short this year to stand in line to shop: avoid a people traffic jam, starting off the season frustrated and tired, instead of merry and bright. Sleep in the day after, get all dolled up, and go to small businesses in your area. Find a lovely for your loved one as you leisurely stroll through the holiday shopping season.

We are all to familiar with the hustle and ordeal Black Friday has become. Recently, we discovered a small initiative to take back our post-Thanksgiving shopping, known as Plaid Friday. Here is how they describe the concept:
The name Plaid Friday was conceived from the idea of weaving the individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is the relaxing and enjoyable alternative to the big box store “Black Friday,” and is designed promote both local and independently owned businesses during the holidays.
Can't make it in Friday? Not to worry, Small Business Saturday (check out their Shop Small campaign) spotlights small businesses, too! In a season centered on celebrations with friends and family, we want to celebrate with our dear customers, too. So if you find yourself here in San Luis Obispo on Friday or Saturday, November 29-30th, Shop Small & Plaid with us. And to celebrate, every purchase you make here at Ruby Rose during these two days enters you into a drawing for $50 store credit! Vintage items already come attached to so much love, so spread gifts unique and local, Santa would be proud.

Snapped, SLO Street Style: November

Posted on: Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Our town is full of locals with an eye for style, so we took it upon ourselves to show them off! Snapped, SLO Street Style posts will highlight the daily fashion in San Luis Obispo that grabs our attention as well as our camera. Work it, SLO!

Some say we on the Central Coast do not have seasons-it is pretty perfect year round-but this past month, there's a crisper breeze, the leaves have begun their change, and we are dressing accordingly. And we spied these ladies mirroring nature's color palette this season...

Not quite ready to swap her sandals for boots just yet, Michelle still kept warm with heavier, woven textures. We love this outfit so much, we had to see it in triple time.

These girls had just the bags and shoes to pair with their knits and laces.

We snapped this cute mother-daughter combo as they strolled into our shop, the long maxi paired with hat and jacket make for a great cool city look. Thanks to you all each for letting us highlight your style, will you be next?

Lucky Copycat

Posted on: Monday, October 28, 2013

For this Copycat round, we pulled looks from the current issue of Lucky magazine which could easily be worn on San Luis Obispo's streets (and are available in store this week).

Fall officially landed here at the store, with a cozy rainy day. This means more magazine perusing, a cozy wool sweater, and warm drink in hand for the rest of the afternoon...

Pop-Up

Posted on: Thursday, December 13, 2012

Investopedia explains "Pop-Up Retail":

The term "pop-up" refers to the short-term duration of the stores, which "pop up" one day and are gone the next.

Thank you to Brooks Antiques for hosting us for our Pop-up shop! We set up in the parking lot and had a blast!

Pop-up shops are popping up all over cities across the country--in store fronts, trucks, and trailers.
With internet shopping and advertising challenges, this has been a really convenient way of getting exposure for small businesses.

Check out a few pop-up shops we've seen!

Hidden Treasure: Roxanne's Café

Posted on: Monday, August 6, 2012

Here's the routine--it's 2:00pm, we are super hungry, we waited too long and didn't fill our lil' fridge.
no. 1: Are we going to eat today?
no. 2: Yessirree. What's it going to be?
no. 1: (We go down our regular list of local eateries)
no. 2: OK, I don't care, you pick.
This goes on for another 10 to 15 minutes....
This week, we remembered that a number of our friends have been telling us about this little gem right around the corner--in our hood! Roxanne's Café.

IMG_1208

Roxanne's is open 11-3 daily and closed on sundays. Perfect, this day is taking a turn for the good.
As we come around the corner, we are enchanted by the seating choices and the atmosphere is so chill and comfortable.

untitled folder6

The majority of the menu changes daily. There are usually specials, salads, soups and treats.

2012-08-02

On this day, we try the eggplant pita and the romaine boats. They were both equally delicious!
We chose the coconut macaroons for dessert, and as sarah would say, "They were a symphony in my mouth!".

2012-08-021

So far a 2 out of 3--they had a great atmosphere, great food, and SCORE, they made a 3 out of 3 with the staff being not only friendly but informative. I loved the relaxed banter that they had with all of their customers. As I sat waiting (not long at all), it is apparent that this place is a favorite to all that visit it.

Thanks Roxanne, Matt and Claire!

Roxanne's Café is located at 1227 Archer St. in the courtyard of Smiling Dog yoga.
