Customer Spotlight: Darling Magazine

Posted on: Friday, July 17, 2015

A few weeks back we received a phone call from Natalie Hemmati, inquiring about borrowing items for a photoshoot. It wasn't until midway through the conversation she mentioned she styles for Darling Magazine--one of our favorite publications! It wasn't hard to say yes, and hosted them for a while at our shop one Sunday. We are still pinching ourselves, and can't wait to see the final photos! Here, Natalie shares how she discovered us and why she found inspiration:

Ruby Rose is not only a vintage store gem in SLO, it is one of my favorite vintage boutiques in Southern California. I first visited Ruby Rose en route to Cambria. My friend and I decided it would ease the long drive if we popped into secondhand shoppes along the way. I was instantly drawn in by the incredible window displays. Once inside, we were greeted by the lovely Kendra who helped us decide on what prized items to purchase. If you have had the pleasure of visiting Ruby Rose, then you already know how unique and cozy the decor is. The interior is very rustic, yet soft and inviting.

My most recent visit to Ruby Rose was a few weeks back. I was styling an editorial for Darling Magazine and was in need of both men and women's wear. My aim is to always utilize interesting one-of-a-kind pieces; and to pair those items with more conventional pieces. I knew the trek would be a lengthy one, but my mind was made up...off to Ruby Rose I was to see what treasures I could find for the shoot. Being in Los Angeles, it is natural for other Californian's to assume we have the best and latest fashion at our fingertips. Whilst this is true, with anything, you must keep in mind familiarity becomes redundant and boring, and new items are always more exciting and fresh.

As always, the trip was a successful one. Thank you so much to the wonderful ladies at the shop. I am so grateful and cannot wait to visit again.

Before we open our doors for the week, check out our top six vintage picks. We constantly update our inventory, and we want to keep you in the loop of the new things coming in! So, without further adieu, we bring you:

1: A dress to frolic in the day and step straight into the night. Its lightweight, flowy fabric lends perfectly for these warm days & not-too-chilly evenings.

2: Someone else did all the work for you with these worn leather bags--if only they would do that with all your new shoes, too. Choose your own adventure, and then choose from a weekender duffel, over-the-shoulder satchel, or dark leather daypack.

3: Buy new glassware, but keep the old, one is silver and the other's gold. Complete with ice bucket, these sets of leaf-gilded glasses are all shapes and sizes, so you can keep your friends, however old (or new) they are.

4: Denim and Dingo?? These vintage boots are brought to you by the seventies--and still looking they did walking into Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's concert in 1970.

5: Weighted for use with just about anything, these blankets transform from comforter to picnic blanket to keeping cozy on the couch--without loosing style or comfort.

6: Tool chest turned treasure chest--this old toolbox is just perfect for organizing all your jewels. Reminds us of the old Caboodles, only heartier.

Customer Spotlight: Christina Lilly

Posted on: Friday, July 10, 2015

We met Christina when she sauntered into our shop, and were excited to see what she came up with when she borrowed a beautiful dress for a shoot. The photos are just stunning! Today, Christina Lilly shares how this shoot came together on her trip way out west, along with her best shots....

As a photographer from the East Coast, I wanted to put together a shoot to capture some of California's best. I already had the pretty face and the location. I just needed to find the right piece to photograph my model in. Ruby Rose came highly recommended from a friend, who happens to be an interior designer. I take her recommendations pretty seriously. She has impeccable taste. I walked into Ruby Rose on a mission to buy some housewares maybe, but I was not thinking about my shoot. I thought maybe a vintage rug or some antique jewelry.

Then I saw this beautiful 1920's, peach, silk chiffon dress and my shoot popped right back into my mind. I knew the dress would translate into any decade. I generally aim to read timeless in my photography. It would be perfect. This was the last item to tie things together. I loved the muted tones of the beach and the cliff side and the dress blended right in with the color palette. The earthy tones and the golden California sun played well against my model Ashley's dark hair and green eyes. The flapper style dress floating on the wind made for some stunning shots. Sometimes it's a little dress that can inspire an entire shoot. You never know what you're looking for until you find it, and Ruby Rose was perfect for that.

Way Out West: Bisbee, AZ

Posted on: Friday, July 3, 2015

The call of the road and six days off...

Bisbee, Arizona was one of our destinations. We were looking for some R&R and beautiful scenery. Bisbee is a scenic old mining town near the Mexico border. When the mine closed in the 70's, the artsy hippie eclectic population came in to take advantage of the old buildings and tucked away feel of this mountain/desert town. Everywhere you look and walk there are stairways and walkways and art! Here are just small examples of what is to be discovered throughout:
