The Alameda Flea

Posted on: Tuesday, April 5, 2011

We went to our fave flea market this past Sunday, The Alameda Point Antiques Faire. It takes place the first Sunday of every month. There was so much style and eye candy galore. As always, it is sooo overwhelming when we first arrive with the abundance of things on our mind--coffee, yummy croissants, smalls, furniture, and of course, which way to go, oh my!!

At The Rose Bowl...

Posted on: Monday, March 28, 2011

We all happened to be in L.A. the other weekend, and after a bit of texting, turns out we were all headed for the Rose Bowl. Hilary, Kathy and I arrived there around 9:30 (that's the latest I have ever started)! Somehow, I fell asleep in the Starbucks parking lot and lost out on some valuable shopping time.

Once in, the first thing we saw was a filming crew and so we thought we'd check out what they were filming. Turns out it was a segment on a new show with Ty Pennington. As I went to talk to Kathy, she was right up in the filming and was trying to outbid Ty on an item. Yep, that is the back of her checking out the inventory as Ty was trying to keep up.

The booth they were filming at belonged to one of our friends, Chris--he sells wonderful items from overseas.

After the hullabaloo all left (why does it take 15 people to shoot such a small segment?!), Chris noticed that his t-shirt was inside out (that's why he's our friend)! Never a dull moment at the flea!

This is a quote by Dr. Seuss that our friend Tia posted. We thought it was perfect!

"Today you are YOU, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You."

Thanks Tia!

The Ruby Review: Biutiful

Biutiful: 4.5 Stars

Starring the forever gorgeous Javier Bordem, this movie was terribly sad but definitely worth seeing. The film shows the months leading to his death, in which he struggles with his bipolar ex-wife, adorable yet sadly neglected kids, and his high stress job. Downside: some parts of the plot weren't fully explained, like his ability to communicate with dead people. I realize that the picture I'm painting here doesn't sound ideal. But I would highly recommend this film. Highlights for me: modern day Barcelona provided a unique background, and to put it simply, Javier was looking fine.

CLUTTER

Posted on: Friday, March 11, 2011

We all strive to live a "comfortable" life, and this can mean many different things. Before turning 50, "comfort" was pretty clear to me. Being raised with a mom who had towels for 'company only', an aunt who had a plastic runner at the front door, and a grandma who always covered the sofa (i still wonder what that sofa looked like), neatness and conserving were expected. Living neat and tidy came to be a habit, clutter, not so much.

A few years back, a friend and I ( we'll call her Georgia) had an opportunity to work as assistants on a 'decor' book. We had a great experience and learned so much. One of the things I came to realize is that the beautiful rooms that we see in the magazines have taken a team to get them that way. Seriously, people just don't live like that.

My favorite stylist, Mary Randolph Carter has written a lot of books and is the stylist and image behind Ralph Lauren (my personal hero, guru, etc.). I am drawn to Mary's style and I now know that her kind of comfort and clutter that she writes about in her books is what I love and try to emulate in my own living. Her last book, A Perfectly Kept House is the Sign of a Misspent Life, says it all. The chapter on clutter spoke to me. These are some of my favorite quotes in the book: "Clutter is a skillfully arranged state of spirit.", "Clutter is all the things you need most, never use, but can't part with.", and "Clutter is the poetry of our homes."

If you come by my house, you will see that I don't have a misspent life. This, to me is comfort. --S.
